Changing A Team's Culture and Impacting The Rest of the Facility

by Mike P
(USA)

I am new to management and have the role of managing operators in a refinery type facility. I want to change the culture at my facility and I read your thoughts on doing such.

My question is, can I focus on the employees under me and hope that by changing the culture within our "group" we can affect the rest of our facility and company? Instead of trying to get the company as a whole to change

Certainly you can create a culture within your team which can impact on the rest of the facility - but it can often be challenging. The best way to get others to sit up and take notice is to

a) Deliver great business results
b) Have a buzz happening in your team that others can sense.

Here are some articles from my premium site on leadership and culture that you may find useful:

Certainly it can be challenging to create a high performance culture when your senior leadership team isn't supportive - but as I often say to the leaders I coach, just because they aren't getting it quite right, doesn't mean that you can't create a sub-culture that thrives and buzzes! It's your role as the leader to protect your team as best you are able from the 'negative' impact of the larger culture.

I don't know if you came across this article at the site - but you may find this useful - some of the tips in it are useful as you think about the type of culture you are wanting to create.

Good luck with your journey
